Korea Expressway Corporation (CEO Kim Jin-sook) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on June 24th with domestic and
international BIM S/W development companies—MIDAS IT, Bentley Systems Korea, Autodesk Korea, and Hanmac Engineering.—to promote full BIM design for highways.
BIM is a technology that integrates, produces, manages, and utilizes information across the entire construction process by combining 3D models with
construction data (such as materials, scheduling, construction costs, and specifications).
BIM design is implemented by modeling the facility using relevant software and then extracting the necessary drawings from the resulting model.
During the design phase, conditions like driving, drainage, and landscape can be simulated for pre-verification.

This MOU was pursued to address the issue that existing BIM software, which is generally used for architectural and general civil engineering design,
lacks modeling functions specialized for highways. Due to this, drawings are not extracted automatically, requiring additional manual input, such as
numerical data entry.
The Korea Expressway Corporation and the software developers will cooperate on improving software functions to enhance BIM design productivity,
including △developing BIM modeling and automatic drawing generation functions that are easy to implement for highway facilities, △supplementing
design standards for BIM design optimization, and △providing testbeds necessary for technology development.
An official from the Korea Expressway Corporation stated, "After introducing full BIM design for the first time in Korea in 2019, we have been
applying BIM technology to all designs since 2021." They added, "We will continue to improve the necessary technology and systems to enhance BIM productivity“
